As always in low season the activities on a tiny island are restricted. First of all you can relax
at one of the beaches. The beach at the Simalai resort (left hand side of the village) is
beautiful with a white pulver sand and the water is as clear as it gets and without any waves.
BUT we found out the hard way : sand flies are everywhere. In this regard we were really
disappointed and couldn't stay longer than one day because the bites were already too
itchy.
The second beach (Charlie beach, named after the resort which is located next to it ) is on the other side of the island and offers and magnificent view of the sunset. However, due to its location on the west side the waves are higher so it is more difficult to swim. But the positive aspect is that there are almost no sand flies. Furthermore, be aware that the (straying) dogs make a pack during the evening and could get aggressive. Getting there is no problem especially if you have a bike. Additionally, have a stop at the Hill Top restaurant and you will get the biggest and cheapest portions on the island.
The third beach is further east of the fishers village where the Koh Mook resort is located. It is also beautiful but rocky so pay attention if you go into the water.
Another smaller and more secluded beach(still with stones) is located further north on the eastern side. It takes you 30min max walking there first along the beach until you reach a jungle trail (take a moskito spray with you). If you really want to have the Robinson Crusoe feeling this is the beach to go.
Emerald cave
One trip for which Koh Mook is famous for is the Emerald cave. In the past this spot was used by pirates to hide their treasures. Now it is a main attraction for the island. First you have to go by boat along the east side until you reach that cave, then you have to swim for 80m along a cave (at some point in total darkness so bring a torch) only then you arrive at the spot you were looking for. A tiny beach, a lagoon completely separated from the outer world. We were lucky that some rain just passed and we were the only people there (including Che). He told us that usually during high season the place is crammed with tourists and sometimes the weather doesn't permit to enter the cave due to the waves and the high tide. So for us this was really one of the highlights.
Overall we paid 400baht for the trip.
P. S. On the way to the cave Che showed us another snorkeling spit where star fish could be found. Funny creatures.
Tip : If you are bitten by mosquitos buy Zum- Bak it will majorly ease the itching.
