Koh Lanta provides several beautiful beaches. However, due to the high waves and the Monsoon time the water wasn't so clear, because all beaches are located on the western side.
Several days we visited Hat Phra Ae (the Long beach) in the north. As the name implies this beach offers a length of 4km and enough space to find a relaxing spot. Furthermore, you won't find many resorts which are located directly at the beach. The sand was soft but like at almost all the other beaches the waves were quiet high.
Our resort was located at the beach called Hat Klong Nin, which is further in the south. It was also quiet a beautiful beach with great sunsets. But due to the rain and the high tide the sand was quiet hard because nothing was left of the beach when the high tide was at the highest point.
Another beach we liked was the Hat Kantiang. Unfortunately, most of it is covered by a resort and during high tide the only space to lay down is if you walk through the Pimalai Resort.
The most secluded beach we visited was the Ao Mai Pai beach. This tiny beach is only reachable by a jungle trail and another dirt road because on either sides it is surrounded by rocks and lays behind a forested slope. Nonetheless, it is worth it but again during high tide there is no space left to lay down.
Cooking class
During our visit to Kwan's Cookery we got to know that it was possible to participate in a cooking class. We always wanted to do one but they were always quiet expensive or the proposed dishes didn't sound that good. But at Kwan's you can choose the dishes which you want to prepare from the menu and then you pay the price of the dish and an additional 300baht as "teaching costs". So if you are two people and each choses one dish each person learns two dishes (makes sense?! ;-)). So overall for three dishes (ried rice with pineapple and shrimp, pad thai and Red curry with chicken) we paid 1260baht. So about the cooking class itself. It started at 12am and when we arrived Kwan told us that she already denied 5 customers and closed down her restaurant just so that she can completely concentrate on us.
We started with the red curry and were taught how to prepare a fresh curry paste and all the other ingredients as well as their substitutes. We learned that the Thai cuisine is really fast and includes a lot of peanuts, fried garlic and onions, as well as brown sugar.
We continued with the Pad Thai, what basically means fried noodles. The main ingredients are of course noodles but also bean sprouts, cabbage, carrots, green onions etc. Having tried fried rice with pineapple on various occasions we just couldn't resist to have a look behind the curtain. To have some variety of the previous two dishes Kwan suggested to have the fried rice with shrimps and even gave us a tiger shrimp for free. Like the previous dishes fried rice has the typical thai ingredients like fried garlic and onions, brown sugar and salt etc. In the end everything is mixed with an egg and presented in an actual pineapple.
Throughout the preparation Kwan also gave advice how to present the dishes and pay attention to various details. Even after finishing Kwan couldn't stop and had to show us how to prepare / cut a pineapple into a presentable shape.
After ca two hours we were (just so) able to finish the food we prepared, the next customers arrived and we suggested to finally open the restaurant. Even then Kwan gave us a second dessert (sweet egg yolk) and showed us how to prepare spring rolls.
Overall we couldn't be happier with this cooking class, and so I urge you if you have the chance go to Kwan's Cookery if not for the cooking class than just for the food.
Food on Koh Lanta
Although Kwan's Cookery was our highlight there are several other restaurants worth checking out. Most of them you will find on Tripadvisor.com.

Drunken Sailor (across the street of Pad Thai Rock n Roll) : Homemade jam (great breakfast) good burger
Kru Kritsana (Long Beach) : Huge portions for a reasonable price
Sala restaurant (Klong nin beach) : Very cheap and huge portions
